Who I Am & Why I'm Running!
My name is Yumeka Brown, and I’m running to represent Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives.
I didn’t come from privilege, I came from purpose. I was born and raised right here in this district. I’ve lived the struggles so many of us face, navigating a broken healthcare system, and watching too many families in our communities be left behind by policies that simply don’t reflect our realities. I grew up witnessing the devastating impact of the war on drugs and the cycle of violence it created, tearing apart families, over-policing our neighborhoods, and criminalizing poverty instead of addressing its root causes.
I’ve served as a local elected official, as Village Clerk in Matteson, and as a Commissioner with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, where I’ve worked to protect our water, improve infrastructure, and fight for transparency and accountability in government. I’ve built coalitions and pushed for equitable investment in neighborhoods long ignored. But I’ve also listened. Deeply. To residents, parents, teachers, seniors, entrepreneurs—people with powerful stories, often unheard by those in power.
This campaign is about bringing those voices to the front.
I’m running for Congress because I believe in environmental justice, clean water and safe streets, affordable healthcare, jobs that pay a living wage, and strong public schools that prepare our kids for the future. I’m running because I know how it feels to sit across from a doctor, terrified about whether your child will get the care they need. Because I’ve had to juggle being a wife, mom, a public servant, and a working woman—often all in the exact moment. Because I’ve seen what happens when policy forgets the people it's supposed to serve.
I’m not here to play games but to make real change.
This district deserves a representative who understands what’s at stake, who will fight for working families, protect our rights, and bring real results home. I’m not backed by corporate interests—the people back me.
This is bigger than one campaign. It’s a movement for equity, justice, progress—and it starts right here, with us.
Let’s build the future we deserve—together.
